The path of Italian fascists to power and its reflection in the Czech press
Klouda, Daniel ; Mejstřík, Martin (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
This bachelor's thesis examines the rise of the Italian fascist movement from 1920 to 1922 and its reflection in selected Czech press. The theoretical part focuses on the Czech media landscape after World War I, followed by a description of the historical and political context of the events observed in Italy, briefly outlining the history of the fascist movement from its origins to Mussolini's appointment as prime minister. The practical part involves a qualitative analysis of articles covering six selected events involving Italian fascists, which were significant for the fascist movement. The choice of these events was influenced by their violent nature - through their violent actions, the fascists eliminated opposition and subsequently managed to discredit and undermine state authority and sovereignty to the extent that their rise to power seemed inevitable. The aim of this work is to monitor and compare interpretations of this development through selected events in three Czech newspapers: the national-democratic Národní listy, the independent Lidové noviny, and the communist Rudé právo. The thesis aims to analyze whether and how the ideological convictions of these newspapers were reflected in the rhetoric used to describe the fascist activities in the examined articles.

Šemberová, Kristina ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)

However, there is no comprehensive publication about Czech gastronomy in 1918 - 1938 period, sparse references and notes can be found in witnesses commemorative volumes, from history of folklore and from the historical press, respectively. Based on the last especially, the image of "first republic" gastronomy is gradually puzzled out. Using a content analysis method, the four biggest newspapers (Lidové noviny, Národní listy, Český deník and Venkov) and eight women journals (Žena, Ženské listy, Ženské noviny, Ženský list, Rozsévačka, Česká Žena, Ženský svět and a "Československá žena" calendar) being published in examined period are investigated. The position of the Prague journal(pražské listy)in the structure of czech press in the latesixties of the 19.century
Tůma, Ondřej ; Sekera, Martin (advisor) ; Krejcar, Robert (referee)
The main aim of my diploma thesis is to determine the position of newspaper called Pražský denník in context to other Czech newspapers of the second half of the sixties of the 19th century. That time was the period which represented the essential changes in development of the modern society and politics in Czech lands. Simultaneously, it is the period when the political journalism started to form. The activity of Pražský denník has not been studied in any research yet. This periodical is considered to be biased and insolvent because it is usually included into official pro- government newspapers. Such evaluation of this newspaper is done without any deeper content analysis. The interpretation of the Czech journalism, which is mainly focused on the effect of opposite newspaper (e.g. Národní listy) and had the main effect on the Czech national movement, does not pay attention to Pražský denník at all. Considering the fact that Pražský denník was published in cargo of 20 000 pieces we should not omit evaluating of this newspaper according to its effect on reader of that time. In my diploma thesis, I would like to focus on the content analysis of Pražský denník and to analyze the thematic composition and territorial focus of individual articles. My interest is also concentrated on the measure and...

Kovářová, Stefanie ; Pokorná, Magdaléna (advisor) ; Parkan, František (referee)
This thesis handles with the events concerning the school law amendment from 1883. It is well known that it was considerably controversial as well as regressive school policy in the Austrian Empire. This policy was aggressively fought over. One of the most prominent characters of the fights was František Tilšer - the only czech member of parliament that didn't vote for the reform. He became the target of incendiary press campaign. This thesis will briefly introduce the legislative developments of school law since the beginning of compulsory school attendance up until the aforementioned amendment. The core of this work lies in analysis of the given problematics in Czech and German period press. The text analysis deals with papers that present wide range of opinions: Národní listy, Politik, Bohemia and Čech. The thesis is thus a probe of political culture of the second part of the 19. century in the Habsburg monarchy as well. Horská, Monika ; Sekera, Martin (advisor) ; Knapík, Jiří (referee)
The thesis Národní listy 1910 - 1914 is focused on the period of ownership change of Národní listy, which was bought by Pražská akciová tiskárna (Prague share printing house) in 1910 from the family of the deceased founder Dr. Julius Grégr. The daily journal, which has retained a degree of independence, has become the official press authority of the political party Národní strana by this sale, mainly represented by Karel Kramář and Alois Rašín. In individual chapters, I am gradually analyzing the underlying materials from which I drew for my work by putting Národní listy in the context of the time and circumstances that led to the creation of the daily journal. The thesis is also aimed to the activities of the preparatory committee, which initiated and succeeded in obtaining the Národní listy for the mladočeská political party. The main part of the text deals with the business transaction itself, illustrates the financial backstage of the company Pražská akciová tiskárna, examines the documents that accompanied the purchase and its preparation and describes the subsequent modernisation of the whole enterprise.

Life style in Czechoslovakia (1918 - 1938) described in gastronomy sections in newspapers and journals of that time
Zábrodská, Kristina ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Vošahlíková, Pavla (referee)
The popularity of the First Czechoslovak Republic in today's press is evident. The rebirth of Czech cuisine is apparent in an inland gastronomy in the last five or seven years. Both chefs and food writers refer to the First Czechoslovak Republic gastronomy more and more frequently and speak highly of its quality and taste. There is no omnibus covering alimentation in Czechoslovakia during the years 1918 - 1938. Pieces of information can be found in memoires, in books dealing with the history of everyday life, in folklore studies and last, but not least, in historical press. An outline of the inland gastronomy in 1918 - 1938 was made in my diploma thesis Gastronomy in the First Czechoslovak Republic press (2012). Using a content analysis method the four biggest newspapers and eight women's journals published between 1918 - 1938 on Czechoslovak territory were examined. Articles were selected on the basis of important religious holidays and traditions (Christmas, harvest etc.) in the years outstanding for the First Republic development (1918, 1919, 1921, 1924, 1929, 1933, 1935 a 1938). For further findings of additional and linking facts, the historical analysis method is used as well. My PhD thesis is based on my previous diploma thesis, but it is more concise, the structure of chapters is changed,...
Josef Penížek, a Journalist of Národní listy
Vepřek, Martin ; Dobeš, Jan (advisor) ; Šouša, Jiří (referee)
My bachelor's thesis is focused on the occupation of Josef Penížek in the "Národní listy". He was born into a Jewish family, in 1858. He was an eager student and acquired a good knowledge of German and slavonic languages at Vienna university. He begann as a translator of slavonic poetry, and writer of literature essays. Josef Penížek received his training in the workshop of the famous journalist, Gustav Eim, which was a gifted correspondent of the "Národní listy". The "Národní listy" was perhaps the most influential newspaper in the Czech lands. He became closely associated with him and was deeply involved in political events. In its successive Vienna correspondents, Gustav Eim from 1879 to 1897 and Josef Penížek until 1918, the Národní listy possessed two of the very skillful Czech reporters of that era. During the next decades he wrote frequently for various czech journals. Another topic of this bachelor's thesis is Penížek's attitude toward the Young Czech party. During that time, Penížek acquired a reputation as an undeviating supporter of "etapová politika". After World War I, Penížek was again asked to be a reporter of the National Assembly in Prag. He was also a lecturer of the Svobodná škola politických nauk. He was an influential but controversial figure in the history of the "Národní listy". The...
